We are excited this month to feature an artist we’ve been following for a while now! We think his work is incredible when it comes to the style of Dark Lettering. It’s super detailed and the linework is on point. We hope you enjoy this interview with Benjamin Hawley.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My names Benjamin Hawley, I’m 23 years old born in Leeds England. I moved to New Zealand with my family when I was 7 years old.

What studio you are working out of/where are you based?

I’m currently working out of a private studio in Whangarei,Northland.

How long have you been tattooing?

Ive been tattooing full time for just over 2 and a half years now.

What got you into it?

I have always been fascinated by tattoos and how you are able to wear pieces of art. From a young age I would spend majority of my time drawing and experimenting with different forms of art.

I always knew I wanted to make a living from my art which eventually led me to getting my hands on a tattoo machine and down the path of tattooing.

Tattoo inspiration?

My inspiration comes from lots of different things. From music to clothing, or even how I’m feeling at the time.

What’s your tattoo style?

I mainly tattoo dark lettering and black and grey realism.

Has your style developed over time?

Yeah I’d say so. I like to experiment with different effects and shapes to create something different from the ordinary lettering pattern.

What would you like to tattoo more?

Would have to be more black and grey realism pieces, from portraits to scenery.

What was the first tattoo you ever did or the first one you got on yourself?

My first tattoo I did/first tattoo I received was 2 roses I done on myself when I was 17.

The strangest tattoo request you have ever received?

I’ve had a few weird requests but the one that sticks out the most would have to be from a man who wanted a list of his ex partners names on his forearm…

Who are you in your private life?

Other than tattooing I’m usually doing something that involves being creative or spending time with friends/family.
