This month we decided to double up on our featured artists and interview the talented Imogen who’s based out of Ōtautahi Tattoo in Christchurch. We are super excited for this interview and hope you all enjoy!

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Imogen, I’m 21 years old. I grew up in England and I moved to New Zealand when I was 13 years old.

What studio you are working out of/where are you based?

I’ve been tattooing for 3 years, I started when I was 18 years old. I’m currently working at Otautahi Tattoo in Christchurch.

What got you into it?

Along my creative journey there have been so many people that have pushed me to what I’m doing as a career now. I have wanted to be a tattoo artist since I was very young, it was always my dream job. My Dad has been covered for as long as I can remember. Whenever he came home with a new tattoo I was always so intrigued. My dad helped a lot setting me on my career path. I also had an art teacher in high school who was the absolute best! She helped guide me and gave me all the best tricks when it came to working in the creative industry.

Tattoo inspiration?

My inspiration mostly comes from outdoors, nature, going for walks, travelling. Taking photos of literally anything that inspires me. I find drawings/paintings from books about nature really inspirational.

What’s your tattoo style?

My style is mostly fine line, black and grey. I love doing anything fine line!

Has your style developed over time?

My style has definitely developed over time! When I started out I was pretty much doing anything that walked through the door any opportunity I had the work on different styles I did it. One day someone came in asking for a fine line floral piece and ever since then I’ve continued to do it, and I love it!

What would you like to tattoo more?

Not too long ago I worked on a big piece which involved me collaging lots of different elements together such as; animals, mathematical patterns, scientific patterns, nature ect. I absolutely love the process of collage it has always been my favourite so creating this piece was amazing and I would love to do more!

What was the first tattoo you ever did or the first one you got on yourself?

First tattoo I got was a snake wrapped around a rose on my arm/wrist when I was 18.

Most famous person you have tattooed?

I haven’t tattooed anyone famous, however it is my dream to tattoo ASAP Rocky one day!

Who are you in your private life?

At home I’m a mumma to a sweet boy named Orlando he is my life! I’m very passionate about art and I love baking and cooking.
